1) 🇮🇳 National

  • BRICS Summit 2026: India is preparing to host the BRICS Summit from 11–13 September 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

  • Railway safety: Indian Railways has approved ₹675 crore worth of projects across West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, including Kavach 4.0 over 712 route km in Uttar Pradesh.

  • Vande Bharat: A new Surat–Udaipur Vande Bharat Express has been approved, connecting Gujarat and Rajasthan.

  • Income Tax: More than 7.8 crore Income Tax Returns for AY 2026–27 had been filed by 31 August 2026.

  • Defence production: The government has set a target of ₹3 lakh crore annual defence production, underlining India's push towards defence self-reliance.

2) 🌍 International

  • SCO Summit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned to New Delhi after participating in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

  • Nepal floods: The Himalayan flash-flood disaster in Nepal has claimed around 987 lives, while rescue operations have continued across affected regions.

  • Terrorism: At the SCO Summit, India called for dismantling the entire ecosystem supporting terrorism.

  • BRICS: India is preparing to host the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the summit scheduled for 11–13 September.

3) 💰 Economy

  • GDP growth: India's real GDP grew by 7.8% in Q1 FY2026–27, significantly above the RBI's earlier 7% estimate.

  • Manufacturing: Manufacturing GVA expanded by 9.2% during April–June 2026.

  • Services: The services sector recorded approximately 10% growth during Q1 FY27.

  • Railway investment: The newly approved ₹675-crore railway projects are aimed at improving safety, signalling and freight movement.

  • Rupee: The Indian rupee strengthened to around ₹94.95 per US dollar, reaching a two-month high, supported by RBI intervention and dollar inflows.

4) 🗓 Date’s importance

  • World Coconut Day: 2 September is observed as World Coconut Day every year.

  • The day highlights the economic, nutritional and environmental importance of coconut cultivation and the coconut industry.

  • Exam Point: World Coconut Day commemorates the founding day of the International Coconut Community (ICC), established on 2 September 1969.

  • National Nutrition Week: 1–7 September is observed as National Nutrition Week in India, focusing on balanced diets and nutritional awareness.

5) 👱‍♂👩‍🦳 Person of the day

  • Runa Khan — Bangladeshi social entrepreneur and founder of Friendship, an organisation working with communities affected by poverty, climate change and displacement.

  • She has been named one of the 2026 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees.

  • Her work has focused on providing healthcare, education and economic opportunities to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.

  • Exam Point: The Ramon Magsaysay Award is often described as Asia's highest honour for public service.

6) 🏅 Sports

  • US Open 2026: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has advanced to the second round of the men's singles tournament.

  • Mirra Andreeva: The 19-year-old French Open champion defeated Janice Tjen 6–2, 6–2 to enter the second round.

  • India's U-23 wrestling: Three Maharashtra women wrestlers — Ahilya Shinde, Vaishnavi Patil and Amruta Pujari — have been selected for India's U-23 World Wrestling Championships squad.

  • Duleep Trophy: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remains one of the major young Indian cricketing names after becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history.

  • Ramon Magsaysay Award 2026: Three individuals have been selected:

    • Runa Khan — Bangladesh

    • Tommy Koh — Singapore

    • Bo Kyi — Myanmar

  • Tommy Koh was recognised for his contribution to international cooperation, diplomacy and the development of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

  • Bo Kyi was recognised for his long-standing work for human rights, accountability and political prisoners in Myanmar.

  • The 2026 awards bring the total number of Ramon Magsaysay Awardees to 359 since the award was established.

8) ️ Other important significance

  • Kavach 4.0: Indian Railways is expanding its indigenous automatic train-protection system to improve railway safety and prevent collisions.

  • Sugar stockholding: The government has reduced the maximum sugar stockholding limit for dealers from 4,000 quintals to 2,000 quintals, effective 15 September 2026.

  • Onion buffer stock: The government has begun a calibrated release of buffer-stock onions to manage prices and improve market supply.

  • Financial inclusion: The Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) continues to play a major role in expanding access to formal banking and financial services.

  • Defence exports: India continues to target higher defence production and exports as part of its Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy.
