🇮🇳 NATIONAL CURRENT AFFAIRS
India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026, marking 79 completed years of independence. The theme of the celebrations was “Yuva Shakti: Leading the journey to Viksit Bharat@2047”, highlighting the role of young Indians in nation-building.
Vande Mataram was included in the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort for the first time. The development coincided with the 150th anniversary commemoration of Vande Mataram, associated with Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and India's freedom movement. Around 2,500 NCC cadets and MY Bharat volunteers participated in the celebrations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the “Sapta Dhara” framework during the 80th Independence Day address, presenting a seven-pillar approach towards the goal of Viksit Bharat.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament concluded on 13 August 2026. The session began on 20 July and ended with both Houses being adjourned sine die. Parliament passed 11 Bills, covering areas including public examinations, taxation, MSMEs, banking records, tribunals, minerals and Kerala's name.
Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 was passed by both Houses of Parliament. It amends the MMDR Act, 1957 and introduces changes concerning mineral-bearing land, mineral-right taxation, mineral additions by existing leaseholders and captive-mine mineral sales.
Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 was passed by Parliament, paving the way for the constitutional name of the state to be changed from Kerala to Keralam, subject to Presidential assent. The change is linked to Article 3 of the Constitution.
FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026 was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The JPC will have 31 members — 21 from Lok Sabha and 10 from Rajya Sabha. The Bill seeks tighter oversight of organisations receiving foreign contributions.
Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026 proposed an independent National Tribunals Commission (NTC). The proposed five-member body would oversee appointments, administration and performance of tribunals.
Union Cabinet approved the GOBARdhan scheme with an outlay of ₹23,731 crore for 10 years from FY2026–27 to FY2035–36. The scheme aims to convert organic waste into clean energy, strengthen compressed biogas production and generate rural livelihoods.
The Cabinet also approved a ₹8,970.20-crore four-lane access-controlled Guwahati–Tezpur corridor in Assam, covering about 135.87 km on NH-15.
Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth became the first woman fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force to complete the Fighter Combat Leader course at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE), Gwalior. The course is often associated with the IAF's elite “Top Gun” training.
PM Narendra Modi inaugurated “Param Pragya”, an AI-enabled high-performance supercomputing facility at IIT Delhi's Sonipat campus, aimed at strengthening research in AI, data science and advanced computing.
Prakriti Gyan Dham, described as a first-of-its-kind eco-educational hub, was dedicated to the nation at the Maharishi Parashar Bioresource Centre in Lucknow. It integrates scientific research, biodiversity conservation, environmental education and botanical heritage.

🌍 INTERNATIONAL CURRENT AFFAIRS
Israel rejected a US-backed 15-point Gaza peace plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces would not withdraw until Hamas is fully disarmed, creating another obstacle to the Gaza peace process.
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia, leading to a national emergency declaration. The earthquake was reported near San José del Palmar in Chocó and was described as one of the strongest earthquakes in Colombia in recent decades.
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup Island in the disputed Kuril Islands on 13 August. Japan strongly protested the visit and reaffirmed its territorial claim over the islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories.
Iran rejected US claims of control over the Strait of Hormuz amid continuing regional tensions. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most strategically important energy chokepoints, carrying a substantial share of global petroleum trade.
Several US states recognised India's Independence Day through official proclamations. Delaware, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts were among the states highlighting the contribution of Indian-American communities.
Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud was appointed as an arbitrator by Russia in an investment dispute involving Ukraine's state-owned Oschadbank. The dispute concerns assets in territories including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
India rejected remarks by Norway's Foreign Minister on Kashmir, reiterating its position that Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of India.
Bangladesh requested additional diesel supplies from India amid a worsening power and fuel crisis. India said it would examine the request while considering its own domestic requirements, refining capacity and fuel availability.

India's retail inflation rose to 4.45% in July 2026, up from 4.38% in June. The data was released under the new CPI series with 2024 as the base year.
Consumer Food Price Index inflation increased to 5.52% in July. Rural food inflation was 5.79%, while urban food inflation was 5.05%.
Telangana recorded the highest inflation among major states at 6.32% in the July inflation data.
RBI's 101st Survey of Professional Forecasters projected India's real GDP growth at 6.6% for FY2026–27, up from 6.5% in the previous survey. Growth for FY2027–28 was projected at 7.0%.
The RBI survey placed the FY2026–27 GDP growth expectation in a 6.0%–7.2% range, reflecting continued but moderated economic expansion.
India's imported urea subsidy expenditure rose sharply to ₹47,956.24 crore in 2025–26, amid increased dependence on imported fertiliser and global supply disruptions.
Reliance Industries topped the 2026 Hurun India family business valuation ranking, with the Ambani family-linked business valued at approximately ₹25.83 lakh crore. The Birla and Jindal families ranked second and third respectively.
Shah Rukh Khan topped India's celebrity brand valuation ranking in Kroll's Celebrity Brand Valuation 2025 report with a brand value of USD 177.9 million. Ranveer Singh ranked second and Virat Kohli third.

🏦 BANKING & FINANCIAL AWARENESS
RBI expanded the Upper Layer of NBFCs to 17 entities for FY2026–27, compared with 15 in the earlier list. New additions included REC, PFC, IRFC and HUDCO. Tata Sons continued in the Upper Layer.
RBI extended the implementation deadline for revised loan-recovery and recovery-agent norms from 1 October 2026 to 1 January 2027. The extension also provides additional time for existing recovery agents to obtain the required certification.
Standard Chartered Bank received IFSCA approval to offer wealth-management products and services from GIFT City, strengthening GIFT IFSC's position as an international financial-services hub.
Indian Bank approved nearly ₹500 crore of MSME loans for 128 beneficiaries during a credit outreach programme held as part of its 120th Foundation Day celebrations. The programme also launched a Unified MSME Portal for digital lending.
The Indian Bank MSME portal uses PAN, GST and Udyam Registration data, supported by APIs and account aggregators, to facilitate paperless lending.
